THE OLDEST WINE IN THE WORLD

The most famous of Calabrian wines is Cirò

Which can be considered as the oldest alcoholic beverage in the world today. In fact, it seems that it descends from the same strain of the vine with which the precious Cremissa wine was prepared, at the time of Greek civilization, offered as a gift to athletes who returned victorious from the Olympics.

cirò

The rows that sprout from the sides of the Crotone coast of Cirò evoke beauty to be protected and places to be preserved. They are the memory of an ancient and still living history: here, set between water and land, between sea and mountains, the ancient Krimisa, now Cirò, was one of the first cities of Magna Graecia and legend has it that its wine was wine of the Olympics. Offered as a gift to the winners of the competitions to recover from the Olympic fatigue as well as a coveted prize of great value: among the Greeks a plot of land cultivated with vines was worth six times a field of cereals! Milone of Crotone himself, winner of six Olympics, is said to have been a great admirer of the wine from our vineyards! We can well say that it was and is the wine of the champions that in ancient times has always enjoyed the reputation of being endowed with therapeutic and healthy virtues. In fact, more than one doctor guaranteed that Cirò is a “safe cordial for those who want to recover their strength after a long illness” and is also an “opulent and majestic tonic for human old age that wants to be crowned with” green “for years to come”. The Olympic tradition was remembered at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 where all participating athletes had the opportunity to taste Cirò as the official wine.
Such was the importance of Cirò wine, that it even seems that “enoducts” were built with terracotta pipes that started from the hills up to the port where the wine was directly loaded, in order to shorten all transport operations.
